Little Mix are Slaying the Music Industry!

Over the week we attended Little Mix as they kicked off the first of their 3 night run of The LM5 Tour in Dublin’s 3Arena on Tuesday night. The four piece female pop group proved that they are one of the biggest and most successful girl group in the world at the minute. Their latest album “LM5” and their current tour has certainly proved their great success has been more than earned. Put together by the British TV Talent show “The X Factor” Little Mix are now role models for millions of girls and women around the world. With their songs and powerful performances Perrie, Jesy, Jade and Leigh Anne not only give their fans the best show of their lives but they empower them at their highest level.

Support on the night was provided by English/Irish boy band New Rules and English singer/songwriter Mae Muller. There was a short break after their sets and then it was finally time for the girls to take over and grace the stage. Suddenly Beyoncé’s song “Run the world (Girls)” echoes the mainly female filled Arena and everyone sings along as if the show had already begun. Immediately afterwards, the light goes out in the arena, a video is then followed of an introduction to the band, their new album, female empowerment and their song “The National Manthem”.  This video already takes us on a journey that this will be no ordinary concert, this will be a concert proving that women are strong. The show opens up with their hit “Salute” calling all women to stand up and become their “recruits”. In black and red fighter outfits the girls sing that they are not just “pretty things” and the arena already has an electrifying feel to it. The female empowerment messages then carry through as the girls jump straight into “power” and the mainly female crowd sing even more powerfully. Lyrics such as “You’re the man but I’ve got the power” get the message across that this show is all about feminism and glorifying women. Throughout the whole show there is spectacular choreography filled with impressive dance moves that you can not take your eyes off, stunning costumes, insane lights and even a fire show! The whole thing is rounded off to an amazing performance.

The evening is filled with all the old hits as well as new ones off LM5, before their performance of “Wasabi” the girls change into colourful outfits backstage while a video is played on the screens of how British TV Presenter Piers Morgan commented on the girls in a negative light and slut-shaming them. A montage of videos and tweets slating Piers Morgan and supporting the girls calling them “strong, beautiful, powerful goddesses” fill the screen. During their performance of Wasabi, the four strong girls sing about how the media talk about the band and try to twist their image where as the girls prove the media do not know what they are talking about...”The Shit the papers write about me, I fold it up like origami.” The girls thank the media for being a topic of entertainment as it’s only making them stronger and getting more successful.

After happier hits such as “Bounce back” and “Black Magic” the girls change into white-beige glittering dresses and the tone of this part of the evening is much more quieter as the girls perform songs such as “Told you so” and “The Cure” proving to the audience that every hard time comes to an end...”I was a little bit lost but I’m not anymore.” After these performances, the girls state that the next song has a very special meaning to them because of the importance of their LGBT fans. They say their song “Secret Love Song” is very close to their heart. The girls stand on a platform that raises above the crowd and the mobile lights on it shine the gay pride colours. Colourful confetti flies over the standing area as the girls sing the strong chorus of the song, creating a major goose-bump moment.

The fourth part of the show is all about activism as a video stating “We are the Activists” comes on the screens as the girls outfit change backstage. The topics of feminism and female empowerment are addressed again as lines such as “What does a feminist look like?” are shown on screens. Their new song “Joan of Arc” and older songs such as “Wings” prove to their fans that they are all strong, beautiful, powerful women and they should never let themselves down. The messages of female empowerment are shown around the Arena as the mainly female audience sings along loudly and proudly especially during “Shout out to my Ex” which was possibly the loudest of the night as the audience joined the girls in singing about their ex boyfriends. “Woman’s World” is then introduced by a quote by Gloria Steinem, which appears in capital letters on the screen “A feminist is anyone who recognises the equality and full humanity of women and men”. During their performance of “Woman’s World” they sing about what it is like to be a woman in today’s society, what they have to put up with and listen to every day in their lives and that you’ve never lived in the world of a woman if you think that’s how it should be.

A dancer interlude to “Forget You Not” comes on while the girls are backstage changing into their outfits, this time they come out in fire like costumes as they sing “Raggaetón Lento” “No More Sad Songs” and “Think About Us” which had the audience on fire with their energy before the girls left the stage to prepare for their encore. After a loud cheer and constant applause, the four piece British pop group return to the stage to end their show with their strong and powerful encore with their strong song “More Than Words” which featured thunder and lightning on the screens as well as rain falling from the ceiling of the arena. They closed the show with one of their biggest hits “Touch” and did an extended version with breath taking dance moves and put everyone into a good mood and dancing happily, it was a fantastic ending to an overwhelming and phenomenal concert. Even as fans were leaving the Arena, Little Mix sent them a strong and wonderful message by playing “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga encouraging their fans to never be afraid of who they truly are. It was a truly fascinating concert with such important elements and statements highlighted. Everyone in the audience had so much fun and left with a big smile on their faces, we didn’t want it to end but we hope they will be back soon. Little Mix certainly proved that they are one of the biggest female groups in a male dominated music industry and certainly going places with their strong messages of female empowerment and LGBT. They delivered a show which will not be forgotten any time soon.
